Sarnia is in southwestern Ontario. The U.S. border is beside the intersection of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. Sarnia is close to the oil fields of Petrolia and Oil Springs. In the 1860s, Sarnia became involved in the commercial petrochemical industry. A company known as Imperial Oil started in east London, then relocated to Petrolia. Standard Oil purchased Imperial Oil in 1898 and moved back to Sarnia.
In 1942, the petrochemical industry grew in Sarnia. Polymer, a crown corporation, built a synthetic rubber factory which caused the growth. Today, the petrochemical industry continues to thrive in Sarnia. Also, the historical petrochemical industry’s location is the Chemical Valley.
