About Sarnia

A Brief History of Sarnia

Sarnia is in southwestern Ontario. The U.S. border is beside the intersection of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. Sarnia is highly accessible due to its proximity to the border and access to rail, water, air and road. It currently has a population of 72,000 residents. London, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, are both a one-hour drive away from Sarnia.

Sarnia was the original territory of the Odawa, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa nations. A French explorer, Robert de La Salle, discovered the area in 1679. He used the name "The Rapids" to reference the area. The First Nations originally coined the name, which is why La Salle used it.
Over time, Sarnia became a community known as Port Sarnia. In 1857, the Town of Sarnia incorporated. At that point, Sarnia became an epicentre for water freighters and ships.
Sarnia is close to the oil fields of Petrolia and Oil Springs. In the 1860s, Sarnia became involved in the commercial petrochemical industry. A company known as Imperial Oil started in east London, then relocated to Petrolia. Standard Oil purchased Imperial Oil in 1898 and moved back to Sarnia.
In 1942, the petrochemical industry grew in Sarnia. Polymer, a crown corporation, built a synthetic rubber factory which caused the growth. Today, the petrochemical industry continues to thrive in Sarnia. Also, the historical petrochemical industry's location is the Chemical Valley.
