Moose Jaw's History

Settlement began in Moose Jaw in 1882. A year later, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) made Moose Jaw a divisional point. Freight yards and repair areas were built there, with more railway links added a few years later. During Prohibition, bootleggers used Moose Jaw's railways to go to the United States.
Moose Jaw became a city in 1903. It was likely named after a creek that looked like a moose’s jawbone.
The city grew a lot between 1911 and 1921. During that time, the city's population increased by 40%. The city kept growing afterward, especially in the 1940s and 1950s.
